Biodynamic horn manure
The biodynamic preparation 500 is a great soil amendment. It is a low tech, low cost process to create with great benefits. It will stimulate seed germination, root growth, help dissolve minerals, feed microbes and overall structure the soil sufficiently.
Materials needed to make this prep are simple, a cow horn and cow manure. I was taught to use manure from a cow that had at least one lactation, though through my experiences I’m not positive that is all that pressing. If you don’t have access to a dairy cow, use what you got. Put some extra intention into it.
This process begins in the fall. Cow horns are stuffed with the cow manure. I find the best way to fill a cow horn is to use another horn, popsicle sticks work, gloves, or just get dirty. I’ve seen biodynamic folks pack basalt at the end of each horn almost closing it in, another step that is not 100% necessary to make a quality product.
After the horns are stuffed we bury them in the ground over the winter months. The opening where cow manure was put into the horn will go into the ground face down. We try to dig 1-2 feet down, as long as the horns are sufficiently covered by soil.
This curation process that goes on during the winter months will create a rich odorless humus-like substance, dark in color and certainly alive. Stored in a cool, dry place. I put mine in a jar with the lid slightly open so its not tightly closed.
I use 3/4 cups of Bd500 in 5 gallons to spray three-five acres. Stir the 500 counter clockwise and clockwise to activate the spray, you want the water and 500 completely mixed together.
